Introduction to Sociology (Sociology 100 – Writing Intensive): This introductory course gave an understanding of the basic principles of sociology as an academic discipline and provided an analytical perspective of society and everyday life through sociological theories. The course used writing to promote the learning of course material and writing assignments contributed significantly to each student’s course grade. Introduction to Sociology of the Family (Sociology 251): In this course we studied, examined, and applied theories and concepts of sociology as they related to the social institution called family. The foundations of sociology and sociological analysis
focus on: groups, status, personality, role, socialization, social processes, social organization, institutions, and social change. This foundation formed the focal point and background from which families and relationships, including marriage, were researched and studied. Survey of Social Inequality and Stratification (Sociology 311): This course provided an introduction to social stratification theory, research and the definitions and measurement of socioeconomic status. In addition, ethnic and gender inequality, and differences in lifestyles and life chances as well as social mobility were discussed. Sociology of Popular Culture (Sociology 459): This course relied on a variety of sociological perspectives to examine the role of popular culture in every life, with an emphasis on the organization of the mass media industry, the relationship between cultural consumption and social status, and the social significance of various leisure activities. Laboratory Assistant - Advanced Statistics Laboratory (Sociology 605L – Graduate Level): Required lab for computer applications for analysis of sociological data. Weekly independent laboratory for computer data analysis with the focus on concepts such as multivariate analysis, analysis of variance: multiple regression procedures; multiple classification analysis, stepwise regression, and path analysis through computer applications (using SPSS for Windows).
